A first-year law student at Dublin City University (DCU) has won an essay competition held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Law Reform Commission.
Ella Santoro won first place in the competition with an essay arguing in favour of an increase in the minimum age of criminal responsibility in Ireland to at least 14.
Trinity College Dublin student Aoife Doheny took second place with an essay arguing that children who have been accused of crimes should receive accommodations, such as access to intermediaries, at trials.
Third place went to Dublin City University student Zara Stafford, whose essay explored Battle v Irish Art Promotion Centre Ltd, the 1969 court ruling holding that a company can only be represented in court by a lawyer, not its directors or shareholders.
The awards were presented by Law Reform Commission president Mr Justice Frank Clarke at a prize-giving ceremony.
