Five first-year law students from across Northern Ireland have completed the inaugural Foot Anstey McKees Accelerate programme, an initiative launched to remove barriers to entering the legal profession and support emerging legal talent.
The successful participants, Jessica Clarken and Lujain Fathelbab from Queen’s University Belfast and Alicia Hayes, Ethan McPhillips and Grace Hamilton from Ulster University, completed a paid internship at Foot Anstey McKees’ Belfast office and will continue to benefit from financial support, mentoring and ongoing professional support throughout their studies.
Selected through a competitive recruitment process, the participants spent a week at the law firm’s Belfast office, where they gained practical insight into the legal profession, worked alongside members of its legal teams and took part in a series of professional development activities.
Chris Ross, partner and head of Foot Anstey McKees’ Belfast office said: “We were extremely impressed by the enthusiasm, ability and potential demonstrated by the five participants who took part in our inaugural Accelerate programme. The initiative has been created to give exposure to the legal profession at an early stage in their studies, while providing the practical and financial support that can help them progress.
“We hope the experience has strengthened their confidence, expanded their professional networks and given them valuable insight into a career in law. Accelerate is about more than just work experience, it is about creating opportunities, breaking down barriers and ensuring talented participants have the development opportunities and connections they need to succeed. We look forward to continuing to support our first cohort as they progress through university.”
