Bar of NI and Law Society welcome Ukrainian judicial delegation to Belfast
Denise Kiley KC and Stanislav Kravchenko, Chief Justice of Ukraine
The Bar Council and the Law Society of Northern Ireland welcomed a delegation of six Ukrainian judges to the Inn of Court last week as part of a visit to the jurisdiction organised by Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI).
The delegation was led by the Chief Justice (President of the Supreme Court) of Ukraine, Stanislav Kravchenko.
Welcoming the delegation, Denise Kiley KC, chair of the Bar Council, emphasised the importance of solidarity in upholding the rule of law and the administration of justice.
Ms Kiley KC said: “At this time of great global disruption, the Bar of NI feel it is of essential importance that all of us who are trying to uphold the principles of the Rule of law and the administration of justice, stand together in support and solidarity despite the grave difficulties and challenges that surround us.
“Although we, as a small jurisdiction, have been tested in our own ability to maintain our system of justice over many years of political violence, we are truly humbled to witness the courage and commitment that members of the judiciary and the legal profession in Ukraine are continuing to display in the face of an unjust war against your nation.
“The bar, along with the Law Society is happy, in whatever small way we can to demonstrate our support for you. We lend our voice in support of you and extend our hand in friendship to you.
“We hope that this visit can strengthen even further the close bonds between our jurisdictions.”
