ICC judge to address Belfast event

Judge Beti Hohler of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is to speak in Belfast later this month.
The Slovenian judge, who was among those sanctioned by the Trump administration in June 2025, will deliver the keynote address at the Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) event on 13 October, titled: “The Rule of Law: Our Compass in an Uncertain World?”
At a time of global uncertainty and democratic backsliding, Judge Hohler will explore where the rule of law now stands.
Thee vent is a unique opportunity for Northern Ireland’s legal community to engage with global perspectives on the rule of law, while also contributing its own insights shaped by the development of expertise in applying the rule of law consistently and credibly in a complex political environment.
Judge Hohler serves in the ICC’s Pre-Trial and Trial Divisions and brings decades of experience from international and internationalised criminal courts. Her career has spanned the ICC, the EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo and litigation practice in Slovenia.
Alongside the keynote, two expert panels — including leading practitioners from Northern Ireland — will examine the rule of law from diverse perspectives. The evening will be opened by a senior legal figure.
The event will take place at the Royal Courts of Justice in partnership with the Law Society of Northern Ireland and the Bar of Northern Ireland.
Tickets are free but limited and can be reserved via Eventbrite.
