Rescheduled event to honour Sunny Jacobs

The Law Society of Ireland has said it will host an event later in the year to honour the legacy of the late death row exoneree Sunny Jacobs.

Sonia “Sunny” Jacobs, 77, died last week in a house fire in Connemara alongside her carer, Kevin Kelly.

She had been due to speak in Blackhall Place today at an event forming part of Pro Bono Week Ireland.

The event, organised by the Law Society, Arthur Cox and Amicus ALJ, was set to highlight the use of the death penalty in the US and the impact of pro bono work in fighting against it.

It was to hear from Ms Jacobs as well as Samantha Knights KC of Matrix Chambers, Carolann Minnock of Arthur Cox, Nina Jayne Carroll of US firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, and Margot Ravenscroft of Amicus ALJ.

“Together with Arthur Cox LLP and Amicus ALJ, we have made the decision to postpone this event out of respect for Sunny, Kevin and all those who knew them,” the Law Society said.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

“To remember the legacy Sunny leaves behind, we will work with the teams at Arthur Cox and Amicus to reschedule this event to later in the year.”
