President Michael D. Higgins has formally appointed Mr Justice Alexander Owens to the Court of Appeal and Mr Justice Seán Gillane to the High Court.

Mr Justice Gillane was nominated for appointment in July, becoming the first judge nominated following the introduction of the new Judicial Appointments Commission.

He fills the vacancy arising from the elevation of Mr Justice Denis McDonald to the Court of Appeal in December 2024.

Mr Justice Gillane has extensive experience of practice in the criminal courts, having called to the bar in 1997 and taking silk in 209. He is a graduate of University College Cork (UCC) and the King’s Inns.

Mr Justice Owens, who was nominated later in July, has served as a High Court judge since 2019.

Educated at Trinity College Dublin and the King’s Inns, he called to the bar in 1980 and took silk in 2000.

In his practice as a barrister, he specialised in criminal law as well as in local government, chancery and conveyancing.

Both judges were appointed by the President yesterday at a ceremony attended by the Taoiseach and by the minister for justice, home affairs and migration.
