The Law Society of Northern Ireland has announced a significant reduction in its electricity and gas costs and emissions.

A 30 per cent reduction in electricity costs, a 20 per cent reduction in gas costs and the complete elimination of electricity-related emissions were achieved following an audit and green energy procurement exercise carried out by Carbonfit.

The Society has now launched a new partnership with Carbonfit which will provide discounted services to Society members.

An event at Law Society House this week brought together members of the Society’s climate justice group, representatives from Carbonfit, and senior figures from the Society to celebrate the collaboration.

Opening the event, Simon Chambers, chair of the climate justice group, outlined the background to the partnership and the group’s work in embedding sustainability within the Society’s operations and long-term strategy.

Ben Craig, head of partnerships and business development at Carbonfit, delivered the keynote address, presenting the results of Carbonfit’s work, which include saving more than 35 tonnes of CO₂e annually.

Closing the event, Law Society president Colin Mitchell said the partnership reinforces the Society’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, and demonstrates that “climate responsibility and financial responsibility can go hand in hand”.

Through the partnership, Law Society members will have access to tailored support from Carbonfit to help firms measure emissions, improve energy efficiency and reduce costs, with discounted services now available.

Mr Chambers said: “Our profession has a key role to play in the just transition to a low-carbon economy. This partnership delivers practical support for our members and shows how we can act decisively, lead responsibly, and still reduce overheads in the process.”

The launch marks another milestone in the Society’s wider climate justice and sustainability agenda, which aims to support solicitors in Northern Ireland to operate more efficiently, reduce emissions, and strengthen environmental leadership within the profession.
