Naomi Long
The Law Society of Northern Ireland and the Bar of Northern Ireland have jointly condemned attempts to intimidate Naomi Long in her home.
Around 40 protesters, some of them masked, gathered outside the justice minister’s home last Wednesday evening.
Mrs Long, who said the crowd amounted to a “mob”, received an an outpouring of support from across the political spectrum in the days which followed.
In a joint statement, the Law Society and the Bar said: “We condemn the actions aimed at intimidating the justice minister, Naomi Long MLA.
“Intimidation and threats against those who serve in public office are an attack on our system of democracy and the rule of law.
“Intimidation and threats of violence must not be misconstrued as civic participation nor a legitimate form of freedom of expression.
“In a climate of increasing extremism, we must be prepared to protect and reassert our support for democracy and the rule of law.”
