Justice minister, Jim O’Callaghan attended the launch of the ‘Fight for your Rights’ booklet at Ballymun Community Law Centre.
Funded by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) and developed in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin students the new edition of Fight for your Rights in Ballymun is designed to be a resource for the community focused on how individuals and communities can assert their rights when interacting with public bodies.
Deirdre Malone, director of the IHREC writing the foreword to the guide said: “No one initiative can bridge a justice gap that we know remains wide and deep. However, this Guide does translate the dry legal jargon into what the living language of law should be: tangible, empowering and relatable stories of what is possible when justice is made accessible to everyone. In a world where the law too often feels out of reach, the Ballymun community, Ballymun Law Centre and Trinity have stepped forward to bridge some of that gap.
“Legal knowledge becomes a living thing when it is combined with the wisdom of a community. I hope this Guide continues to assist this community to continue to identify where law might help to drive positive change where injustice exists.”
Mr O’Callaghan said: “I was very pleased to launch the ‘Fight for your Rights’ booklet in the Ballymun Community Law Centre today. Congratulations to all involved for producing such an informative, practical and important guide which will empower people with knowledge of their human rights and supports when engaging with public services. I commend all those involved.”
