NI: Judicial review proceedings over park name adjourned

An application for a judicial review against a Northern Ireland local authority after it named a playground after an IRA hunger striker has been put on hold.

The High Court in Belfast yesterday heard that Newry and Mourne District Council and the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland would oppose the application by Bea Worton.

Ms Worton has objected to the park’s naming after Raymond McCreesh, one of the hunger strikers who died in prison in 1981 alongside nine other Irish republicans.

She has argued that the local authority breached its own equality scheme and section 75 of the Equality Act 2010 by allowing the park to be named after McCreesh.

She has also said the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland should have referred the matter to the Secretary of State.

Barrister Paul McLaughlin sought an adjournment due to other commitments, which was granted by Mr Justice Paul Maguire.

Mr Justice Maguire urged all sides to come up with a suitable new date within two to three weeks.
