The chair of the Bar Council of Northern Ireland Denise Kiley KC has extended her congratulations to Fiona Doherty KC and Moira Smyth KC who were sworn into office as High Court judges on Friday.

Ms Kiley KC said: “On behalf of the Bar, I offer my warmest congratulations to Fiona and Moira on their appointment as High Court judges today. During their careers at the Bar both Fiona and Moira demonstrated the highest commitment to the rule of law and equal access to justice.

“Amongst their many notable achievements during their careers at the Bar, Moira served as chair of the Bar Council from 2022- 2024 and Fiona was chair of the Bar’s professional conduct committee during 2019 and 2020.

“It is especially encouraging to see two new female High Court judges sworn in.

“Diversity in our judiciary is crucial because it furthers public trust and the quality of judicial decision-making by reflecting the society served by our judges.

“We wish Fiona and Moira the very best on what is a significant day for them and their respective families.”
