Born in December 1934, Mr Hooper was educated at Blackrock College, University College, Dublin and the Law Society. Qualifying in 1959, he practiced as a solicitor at Hooper & Company in Dun Laoghaire for many years and served as president of the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association from 1975 to 1976.

Prior to his legal career Mr Hooper was an Olympic sailor representing Ireland at the Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964 Olympics. In 1960 Mr Hooper along with Peter Gray, racing in the Flying Dutchman class, secured Ireland’s first win in an Olympic sailing competition finishing in tenth place overall. Condolences posted on RIP.ie described him as “an inspiration for early Olympic sailors and Irish sailing”.

After his Olympic career he continued to support Irish sailing being instrumental in setting up the National Yacht Club Junior Section. National Yacht Club member, Ann Kirwan, recalls that he was “a great mentor to the instructors and parents during the early years of the NYC junior section”.

Mr Hooper is predeceased by his parents Seán and Gladys and brother Garry. He is survived by his wife Berni, children Mark, Síobhra, Seán and Niamh and his grandchildren Mia-Mai, Marc Alexander, Daisy, Emma, Holly and Eve.

Mr Hooper’s funeral mass will take place at 10am on Friday 4 September at St Michael’s Church in Dun Laoghaire.
