Legal rights group FLAC has announced the appointment of solicitor Christopher McCann to provide advocacy and legal representation to the Traveller community.

The rights group is launching a dedicated Traveller legal service, supported by the Community Foundation and in co-operation with a steering group made up of representation from all of the national Traveller organisations, later this month.

Mr McCann will provide representation in cases that that best advance the interests of the Traveller community in achieving equality and vindicating their human rights.

“The Traveller community in Ireland suffers enormous marginalisation and discrimination,” he said. “There is an unmet need for legal assistance and representation that lawyers have a responsibility to address.

“I am grateful to FLAC, the steering group of Traveller organisations and the Community Foundation in Ireland for this opportunity.”

A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, Mr McCann previously completed an internship with the Law Reform Commission and worked as a stagiaire in the European Parliament.

He trained as a solicitor with McCann FitzGerald, qualifying in 2016 and working in litigation since then. During his traineeship, he was editor-in-chief of the Hibernian Law Journal and part of the Law Society team which won the Corn Adomnáin international humanitarian law moot.
