Dr Kevin Costello, associate professor of law at UCD Sutherland School of Law, has been elected as an honorary bencher by The Honorable Society of King’s Inns. He dined for the first time as a bencher last Thursday evening. He was joined at the event by a number of colleagues from UCD School of Law to celebrate this acknowledgement of his outstanding scholarly achievements.

The election to honorary bencher is one of the highest honours that the Irish legal community can bestow. It is a means of honouring distinguished individuals who have made major contributions to public life, government, the judiciary, or the legal profession.

Dr Costello holds a BA from Trinity College, Dublin, a Barrister-at-Law degree from The Honorable Society of King’s Inns, an M Litt from Trinity College, Dublin and a PhD in law from University College, Dublin.

His publications include monographs on The Law of Habeas Corpus in Ireland (2006) and The Court of Admiralty of Ireland 1575-1893 (2011), as well as articles on aspects of English and Irish legal history, administrative law and employment law, published in English, Irish and American journals.

His principal current research interest is in the history of judicial review of administrative action in English law between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries.

In 2014, Dr Costello was one of the first recipients of the Irish National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning Teaching Heroes Award, and in 2024 he obtained a university Teaching Excellence Award. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Legal History and of the Irish Jurist.
