University of Limerick hosts Court of Arbitration for Sport workshop

The University of Limerick’s law school has hosted a first-of-its-kind workshop delivered by the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Delegates from Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand and the USA took part in the workshop, the first to take place in the EMEA region outside of the court’s home in Lausanne, Switzerland.

They discussed practice and procedure of the court and recent jurisprudence.

The workshop was hosted by adjunct faculty members Cían Kelly BL, an Irish barrister who was appointed to CAS in January, and Klaus Reichert SC, of Brick Court Chambers in London.

Professor Shane Kilcommons, acting president of the University of Limerick, opened the workshop and welcomed William Sternheimer from CAS to address it.

Mr Kelly told Irish Legal News: “As a member of the adjunct faculty at the School of Law in the University of Limerick, I was delighted to participate in the recent CAS workshop in Limerick.

“It was an outstanding event, and I want to give particular credit to Dr Laura Donnellan and Klaus Reichert SC, who, together with myself and the law school, organised the workshop and helped bring leading international expertise to UL.

“I am also especially grateful to William Sternheimer, manager of education and training at CAS, for travelling to Ireland to deliver such engaging and insightful sessions, and for his continued commitment to supporting CAS arbitration education in Ireland.”

He continued: “I am equally pleased to be working with Klaus Reichert SC and Professor Lucy-Ann Buckley in developing a new arbitration module for the LLM in commercial law, which will launch in the spring semester.

“This initiative represents an important step in expanding Ireland’s capacity in international dispute resolution.

“Looking ahead, we are hopeful that UL will host both a CAS seminar for practitioners and students, as well as a dedicated CAS workshop for arbitrators next year.

“These developments would further strengthen the University of Limerick’s emerging reputation as a centre of excellence in arbitration and sports law.”
