UK government imposes sanctions on New IRA and individual
The UK government has imposed sanctions against the New IRA and an individual which it suspects of involvement in terrorist activity.
From 6 November 2025, Kieran Gallagher and the New IRA are subject to an asset freeze under the Counter-Terrorism (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 — the second time the Treasury’s counter-terrorism regime has been used in Northern Ireland.
Mr Gallagher, who the government suspects of “being involved in terrorist activity”, has also been banned from acting as a company director.
Lucy Rigby, the economic secretary to the Treasury, said: “This action is the second use of the Treasury-led domestic counter-terrorism regime to target Northern Ireland-related terrorism.
“These designations reflect this government’s continued commitment to protecting the peaceful consensus of the people of Northern Ireland, and to upholding the principles of the Good Friday Agreement in support of the UK’s wider efforts to protect national security for all citizens.”
