Two nominated for Supreme Court
Mr Justice Brian O’Moore and Ms Justice Niamh Hyland have been nominated for appointment to the Supreme Court.
The two Court of Appeal judges have been nominated to fill the vacancies arising from the retirement of Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne this week and the scheduled retirement of Mr Justice Peter Charleton in April.
Mr Justice O’Moore was educated at Trinity College Dublin, calling to the Bar in 1984 and to the Inner Bar in 1999.
He was appointed to the High Court in December 2019 and to the Court of Appeal in October 2023.
Ms Justice Hyland was educated at Trinity College Dublin, Magdalen College Oxford and the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.
She called to the Bar in 1994 and to the Inner Bar in 2012, before being appointed to the High Court in December 2019 and the Court of Appeal in October 2024.
She is a former member of the Bar Council and various committees, and a former board member of the Irish Commercial Mediation Association.
She also previously served as a member of the Rehab board and as a director of Open Spectrum CLG.
“The government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Connolly of the nomination in accordance with constitutional practice,” the Department of the Taoiseach said.
