Top legal figures to address civil legal aid conference
Top legal figures will next week address a major day-long conference on civil legal aid reform.
Hosted by FLAC and Trinity College Dublin School of Law, the conference will bring together Ireland’s access to justice stakeholders and experts to respond to the review of the civil legal aid scheme and to reflect on how to achieve meaningful reform in the area.
FLAC has previously highlighted Ireland’s “civil legal aid crisis” and the need for “long-overdue comprehensive reform”.
The conference will take place on Monday 12 January 2026 from 9am in the Arts Building at Trinity College Dublin.
Justice, home affairs and migration minister Jim O’Callaghan will open the event, to be followed by remarks from Chief Justice Donal O’Donnell.
Professor Síofra O’Leary, former president of the European Court of Human Rights, will deliver the conference’s keynote address.
Eilis Barry, FLAC chief executive, will set out FLAC’s vision for a reformed system of legal aid.
Michael McGrath, the EU commissioner for democracy, justice, the rule of law and consumer protection, will deliver remarks on the EU, the rule of law and access to justice.
