TDs to debate Gaza aid flotilla motion this afternoon

A rare cross-party motion on the Global Sumud Flotilla is to be debated in the Dáil this afternoon as activists near Gaza in their bid to break the Israeli blockade and bring humanitarian aid to starving Palestinians.
The joint motion, tabled on behalf of all members of the Dáil, is currently scheduled to be debated at 3.51pm this afternoon.
Two Irish lawyers, Gemma McLoughlin-Burke BL and Leigh Brosnan BL, are currently on board the Shireen, the independent legal support boat sailing towards Gaza alongside the aid flotilla.
Last Thursday, the government said it would explore whether it could send an official to join the legal support boat as an observer.
However, Irish Legal News understands that officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had yet to contact anyone on board the Shireen as of Saturday morning.
Sinn Féin TD Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh is expected to ask Simon Harris in the Dáil this afternoon about his “immediate plans to protect Irish citizens” taking part in the flotilla.
The progress of the Global Sumud Flotilla can be tracked on the flotilla’s website. Updates from the independent legal support boat can be found on its Instagram page.
