Sally Rooney books withdrawn from sale in UK due to her support for Palestine Action

Irish novelist Sally Rooney, made famous by bestsellers Normal People and Conversations with Friends, has said that her books will be withdrawn from sale in the UK due to her support for Palestine Action.

Palestine Action is a pro-Palestinian direct-action group that campaigns against companies it believes are producing military equipment for Israel. Following a break in at RAF Brize Norton in June 2025, where two military planes were spray painted, the group was proscribed by then Home Secretary Yvette Cooper under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Under Section 12 of the 2000 Act it is an offence to express “an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organisation” or “to invite support for a proscribed organisation”.

Following the group’s proscription Ms Rooney publicly stated that she would use the proceeds from her book sales to support Palestine Action.

Ms Rooney has now said in a statement provided to the Guardian that following a discussion with her publisher it was determined that it could no longer supply her work in the UK as to do so might constitute a serious criminal offence.

The proscription of Palestine Action has been challenged by one of the founders of the group Huda Ammori who was successful in the High Court but unsuccessful at the Court of Appeal. The case is due to be heard before the Supreme Court on 4 November.
