Northern Ireland victims seek inclusion in Post Office law

Northern Ireland victims should be included in new UK legislation on the Post Office scandal, a lawyer representing dozens of subpostmasters has said.

The UK government plans to legislate to clear convictions in England and Wales linked to the Horizon IT scandal, said to be the biggest miscarriage of justice in UK legal history.

Michael Madden, director at Madden & Finucane Solicitors, said the announcement “has created real concern for subpostmasters in Northern Ireland”.

“Today’s announcement means that there is uncertainty as to how and when legislation will be introduced in Northern Ireland,” he said.

“Unfortunately, this uncertainty has added to the ongoing distress suffered by wrongly convicted subpostmasters in NI and means that they could be left in a worse position that those in England and Wales.

“I have written to the NI Executive to seek urgent clarification regarding their response to today’s announcement.”
