Northern Ireland lawyer running 800km for cancer charity in friend's memory

Jenny Moore

A solicitor has raised more than £6,500 for one of Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charities in memory of a late friend.

Jenny Moore, a senior employment lawyer at Danske Bank, is aiming to raise at least £9,100 for Marie Curie NI following the loss of her friend Sarah Hooks.

Sarah, an accountant with KPMG, passed away in February 2025 at the age of 35 following a two-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Before she died, a pregnant Ms Moore and her husband were able to tell Sarah that they would be giving their daughter Lily the middle name Sarah in her honour.

She has now taken on an ambitious running challenge to raise funds for Marie Curie and its work supporting people in Northern Ireland with terminal illnesses.

“Sarah was just 35 when she died, but the impact she made in those 35 years is really quite phenomenal,” Ms Moore told Irish Legal News.

“I’m doing this challenge to mark Sarah’s legacy — not that she needs any help with that.”

From May this year until Christmas Eve, Ms Moore is aiming to run at least 800 kilometres. Having clocked up 720 kilometres so far, she is well on her way to reaching her goal “and hopefully exceeding”, she said.

She will complete the challenge in Helen’s Bay, Co Down, on Christmas Eve, where Sarah’s family and friends will gather at the finish line.

Ms Moore said: “I have received some incredible support, having raised £6,500 over the past couple of months. Many people have made contact as we have realised that Sarah was a mutual friend, and expressed their love for her.

“I understand that the average cost of providing 24 hours of care at a Marie Curie Hospice is £9,100.

“By ‘paying for a day of care’ the donor will be supporting all aspects of the hospice, ensuring patients, families and loved ones can access crucial care and support.

“I would love to be able to remember Sarah by having a day of critical care made possible in her memory.”
