The Law Society of Northern Ireland has launched a new “solicitor safety toolkit” following a rise in threats and abuse.

A survey carried out by the Society last month found that 66 per cent of members have been subjected to some form of threat or abuse in the course of their work.

Nearly six in 10 (58 per cent) of respondents said these had a negative impact on their wellbeing, with many reporting stress and anxiety.

The new toolkit provides a practical guide to managing personal safety risks at work, at home and in other locations.

Designed for use by firms, individual solicitors and support staff, the toolkit outlines how to identify risks, respond to threats and access support if incidents occur.

It follows the Law Society’s establishment of a solicitor safety group last year, which has pushed for more legislative protections for solicitors.

Emma Lyons, a member of the solicitor safety group, discussed her own experience of harassment in an interview with Irish Legal News last year.

Law Society president Mark Borland said: “Intimidation directed at solicitors and their staff is on the increase and the impact of this on their health and wellbeing is concerning.”
