New bill on CPD obligation for dentists

New legislation is to introduce a statutory basis for continuing professional development (CPD) for dentists.

The proposed amendment of the Dentists Act 1985 will ensure continued patient safety, allow the public to retain confidence in the dental profession, and bring the regulation of the dental profession in line with that of other health professions, the government says.

The changes proposed will provide a new framework for the obligations and powers of dentists, the regulator, and employers. The Dental Council will be empowered to act proactively in cases of non-compliance, instead of waiting for a fitness to practise complaint to arise.

Health minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said: “Continuous professional development ensures dentists stay at the forefront of innovation, delivering safe, high-quality care in line with international best practice for their patients.

“Our health system depends on professionals who are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills and who are working at the top of their training.

“This reform is vital for patient safety, professional excellence, and public trust.”

The Department of Health will now draft the general scheme of the proposed legislation.
