Mr Justice O’Moore elected president of European Network of Councils for the Judiciary
Mr Justice O’Moore of the Supreme Court was elected president of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary at its General Assembly in Paris.
The European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ) unites the national institutions in the member states of the European Union which are independent of the executive and legislature, and which are responsible for the support of the Judiciaries in the independent delivery of justice. The organisation was founded in 2004.
The ENCJ has 23 member organisations including the Judicial Council of Ireland. A number of other organisations are observer members to the Network including the three Judicial Councils of England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. There are 17 observer organisations, bringing the total of members and observers to 40. Every member state of the EU, except for Poland, enjoys member or observer status.
The General Assembly of ENCJ is composed of the members of the Network. It meets at least once per calendar year and is convened and presided by the President. The General Assembly elects the President and Executive Board who are responsible for implementation of the Network’s programme of Activities.
The ECNJ works to protect and promote the Rule of Law by providing support for the independence of the European judiciary dedicated to accountability and quality. It acts as the voice of the independent European judiciary and provide its perspective to the EU institutions. The Network also seeks to assist Councils for the Judiciary in the age of digital transformation and to strengthen mutual trust among the judiciaries of Europe.
