Mr Justice David Barniville has been nominated by ministers for appointment as president of the High Court.

Currently an ordinary judge of the Court of Appeal, Mr Justice Barniville will succeed Ms Justice Mary Irvine, who is taking early retirement from the middle of July.

On her appointment in 2020, Ms Justice Irvine became the first woman to serve as president of the High Court and the first person in the history of the State to hold a fourth judicial office.

A graduate of University College Dublin and the King’s Inns, Mr Justice Barniville called to the Bar in 1990 and became a senior counsel in 2006. He served as chairman of the Bar Council from 2014 to 2016.

His judicial career began with his appointment to the High Court bench in 2017 before his elevation to the Court of Appeal in 2021. He served as president of the Association of Judges of Ireland (AJI) from 2019 to 2021.

According to the Law Society Gazette, the government has also nominated solicitor Eileen Roberts for appointment as an ordinary judge of the High Court.
