The multi-disciplinary conference in Dublin’s Wisdom Centre on Tuesday 5 September, 9.30am–1pm, will see academic and legal experts as well as civil society voices discuss the barriers to accessing social housing supports experienced by people who have suffered domestic violence.

The event will incorporate the launch of a new report by MLRC — with support from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission — which will focus on the intersection of domestic violence and homelessness and, in particular, the barriers to accessing housing supports faced by those who have fled their homes because of domestic violence.

As well as setting out the existing legal and policy landscape for victims of domestic violence, the report will draw on relevant international experiences to make suggestions for change. It will also consider the way in which the public sector equality and human rights duty might effect change and result in benefits for those fleeing domestic violence.

The aim of the report and conference is to produce practical proposals for change and spark a dialogue with key stakeholders.

Speakers at the conference will include Labour leader Ivana Bacik, who will open the conference, as well as report author and academic Dr Sarah Hamill of TCD Law School, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission’s chief commissioner Sinéad Gibney, legal practitioner Sandra McAleer and others.
