Limerick Institute of Technology students form Law Society

Students at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) have established a Law Society for students interested in a career in the law.

Karen Kearney, partner at Cantillons Solicitors, delivered the society’s first guest lecture a day after the society’s inaugural meeting, where a six-member committee was formed.

Mark McNulty, inaugural chairman of the society, told Irish Legal News: “The society was founded after second year students tried to find an effective means of unifying undergraduate Law & Taxation students across all four years of the degree.

“Having run a successful recruitment drive, which saw over 50 members join within the first week, the inaugural meeting of the society took place on February 14th. The society has expanded quickly since then to have members from a number of courses, including a number of Marketing students with an interest in law.”

Ms Kearney offered the society’s inaugural meeting an insight into medical negligence litigation, and the LIT Law Society committee hopes to attract more guest speakers from the legal profession over the months to come.

Mr McNulty said: “The newly-formed Law Society will serve as a valuable opportunity for students to attract guest speakers, learn about employment opportunities in the legal sector and further their interest in law through competitions and social events.

“As members, we are enthusiastic to make connections in the legal sector and enter into a career in law on completion of our degrees.”

Mr McNulty is joined on the committee by secretary Robert Jordan, treasurer Shannon Walsh, social media officer Amie Flynn and events officers Ian Murray and Luke Hogan.
