The Lady Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, Dame Siobhan Keegan, and Madam Justice Denise McBride shared their journey to the senior judiciary as the keynote speakers at a Belfast event for women lawyers and law students.

Hosted by QUB Women in Law, the annual networking event, now in its third year, aims to empower and connect women, providing a platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and professional growth. Over 100 women attended this year’s event.

Event organisers Tamara Duncan and Ruby Sturgeon said they were honoured to host the two trailblazing judges, who were the first women appointed to the High Court in Northern Ireland.

Attendees first heard from Madam Justice McBride who shared her journey to her position now, detailing the challenges she faced as a woman in law and gave her top tips for those working their way up the career ladder.

Dame Siobhan then discussed her inspirations and her hope for the future of the legal profession being, not just more inclusive for females, but also for those from different socio-economic and ethnicity backgrounds and for those with disabilities.

The Lady Chief Justice said: “I was honoured to be a part of this event and to contribute to the dialogue surrounding women in law. It’s crucial to create spaces where women can support and empower each other, and this event did just that. I’m thrilled to see the impact it had on attendees.”

Lisa McKeown, a newly-qualified barrister who has attended the event for three years straight, said: “Attending this event was truly empowering. It is refreshing to connect with other women in the legal profession and to hear from inspiring speakers who share their experiences and insights. I left the event feeling motivated and equipped with new ideas to advance my career.”

Reflecting on the event, co-organiser Ms Duncan said: “I believe that by creating opportunities for women in the legal profession to connect, learn, and support one another, we can foster a more inclusive and empowered community where every woman has the opportunity to thrive in her career.

“With such a good turn out three years in a row, it highlights the importance of such an occasion, and I hope that the annual networking event will continue for years to come.”
