A new book exploring Ireland’s legal history has been launched in Belfast by the Irish Legal History Society.

Confluences of Law and History: Irish Legal History Society Discourses, 2011-2021 brings together an eclectic mix of papers on aspects of Irish legal history from the early modern period to the 20th century.

The volume is edited by Felix Larkin FRHistS and UCD Sutherland School of Law’s Dr Niamh Howlin, with contributors including leading historians, legal historians and legal practitioners.

They make use of archival sources, personal papers, reported cases, parliamentary papers, newspapers and other sources, to explore themes such as the role of litigants, perceptions of the law and women and the law and the impact of social and constitutional change on the law.

Dame Siobhán Keegan, the lady chief justice of Northern Ireland, attended the book’s official launch in Belfast last Friday.

The book is available from Four Courts Press and has also been distributed to members of the Irish Legal History Society.

The Legal History Society is open to all who are interested in Irish legal history. Those wishing to join should contact Paul Egan SC at Mason Hayes & Curran LLP at pegan@mhc.ie or Professor David Capper at QUB at d.capper@qub.ac.uk.
