Ms Sugden addressed representatives from criminal justice organisations across Europe who have collaborated with NICEM through the Good Practice Plus project.

The EU-funded initiative aims to develop and share best practice in tackling racist hate crime and hate speech.

Ms Sugden said: “I am committed to playing my part to deliver a safer community for all. This can only be achieved through effective partnership working.

“As a society we must continue to challenge the prejudice and views that sustain racism and all forms of hate crime, through raising awareness, education and challenging myths and stereotypes.

“My Department’s Community Safety Strategy recognises the importance of tackling hate crime among those in our society who may feel more vulnerable.

“NICEM is to be commended for the partnership approach they have taken through the delivery of the Good Practice Plus project and I welcome the fact that we here in Northern Ireland, have been able to learn from others working across Europe and had the opportunity to share and reflect upon our own approach with others.

“Today’s conference highlights the valuable contribution that all the agencies represented are making to tackle hate crime across Europe, and my Department will continue to work in partnership with NICEM and others to support and enhance this work.”
