The Kerry native had a 25-year-long career in the law including a period as a parter at William Fry before leaving to set up the SkelligSix18 distillery in Cahersiveen with her husband, Patrick Cooney, in 2019.

Fianna Fáil councillor, Norma Moriarty, speaking on Radio Kerry paid tribute to Ms O’Connell describing “the extraordinary energy” she brought to “everything that she did”.

A champion of her home county Cllr Moriarty further told the Irish Independent that the loss of Ms O’Connell to South Kerry is “immeasurable”.

Speaking on social media local Cahersiveen businesswoman Lisa O’Shea said: “She was immensely proud of her roots and she dedicated so much of her life to making our community a better place. So much of what she achieved happened quietly, without seeking recognition, and many people will never fully realise the lasting impact she had.”

Ms O’Connell is survived by her husband and children Seán, Sadhbh, Liam and Cathal.

Her funeral mass took place yesterday at Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church, Cahersiveen.
