UCD Professor Emeritus Marie Keenan, Queens University Professor Anne-Marie McAlinden and Dr James Gallen of Dublin City University have received the European Society of Criminology / Association Europeenne de Criminologie book prize for the book they co-authored Transforming Justice Responses to Non-recent Institutional Abuse.

The book was unanimously selected for making “an outstanding contribution to European Criminology”.

Drawing on 74 in-depth interviews with victim-survivors and church and state actors, the open-access book examines legal and justice responses to historical institutional abuse across the island of Ireland. It proposes a new framework intended to strengthen accountability and improve processes and outcomes for victim-survivors.

Professor Keenan is emeritus professor of criminal and restorative justice at the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice and a member of the UCD Geary Institute For Public Policy.

Dr Gallen is associate professor in law at the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University and chair of the PhD programme.

Professor Anne-Marie McAlinden is a professor of law at the School of Law at Queen’s University Belfast with interests in restorative justice, sexual abuse and institutional abuse.
