Increase in US asylum seekers in Ireland

Nearly 100 Americans sought asylum in Ireland last year, according to new figures.
A total of 94 US citizens applied for international protection in 2025, up from 22 in 2024, The Irish Times reports.
The figure was previously on a gradual upwards trend, with 18 applications in 2023 and 13 in 2022.
There is no data to indicate how many of the applications were successful.
Outside of the asylum system, around 9,600 US citizens migrated to the State in the 12 months to April 2025, up from 4,900 in the previous 12 months.
