First solicitor appointed to the High Court retires after 17 years on the bench

Mr Justice Michael Peart, the first solicitor appointed to the High Court, has retired from the Court of Appeal.
The president of the Court of Appeal, Mr Justice George Birmingham, led tributes to the retiring judge on Friday.
Mr Justice Peart, who qualified as a solicitor in 1970 and practised for more than 30 years, was appointed to the High Court in 2002 and elevated to the Court of Appeal on its creation in 2014.
Earlier this month, the Government said it would nominate Maurice Collins SC to take Mr Justice Peart’s place on the Court of Appeal after his retirement.
