Eversheds Sutherland to close Russian offices following Ukraine invasion

Corporate law firm Eversheds Sutherland has become the latest international firm to announce the end of its operations in Russia.

The firm expanded into Russia in 2017 and has around 50 staff across two offices in Moscow and St Petersburg, which will now close.

The announcement comes within days of magic circle firm Linklaters announcing the closure of its own office in Moscow.

A spokesperson for Eversheds Sutherland said: “This decision has not been made lightly, and is not a reflection on our valued colleagues in those offices, but we will not continue to operate in Russia given its government’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Our priority now is to support our 50 colleagues in Russia and to work together to ensure an orderly transition of the business in compliance with our professional obligations.”

The firm also reaffirmed its statement last week that it is “not accepting any mandates from the Russian government or Russian state-controlled entities”.
