Carson McDowell chief to be awarded 2022 MPL Industry Defender Award

Roger McMillan

Roger McMillan, managing partner and head of healthcare at Belfast-based Carson McDowell, has been named as a recipient of the 2022 Industry Defender Award by the board of directors of the Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association.

The award is presented to individual defence lawyers who have made outstanding lifelong contributions to defending physicians, other healthcare professionals, hospitals, and clinics, and their exceptional work on behalf of medical liability insurers.

Mr McMillan was nominated for the award by two of the firm’s clients, the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS) and the Medical Protection Society (MPS), for his specialism in high-value, complex clinical negligence claims and regulatory/professional discipline investigations and his years successfully defending numerous healthcare professionals in Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr McMillan said: “I am honoured to receive this reward and very grateful to my clients MDDUS and MPS for nominating me. Without their very valued instructions over the last 21 years, this simply would not have happened. I can honestly say that a solicitor could not ask for two better clients.

“Of course, the award itself is recognition of the tremendous and hardworking healthcare team at Carson McDowell who go above and beyond in striving to protect healthcare professionals in Northern Ireland and Ireland from the challenges that are thrown at them on a daily basis.”

Mr McMillan will receive his award from the MPL Association at its 2022 conference in Salt Lake City tomorrow alongside lawyers Lori A. Barker, C. Wm. Bradley, Jr., Carl Hagwood, Michel J.J. de Ridder, and Coreen Silverman.

Brian K. Atchinson, president and CEO of the MPL Association, said: “These outstanding defence lawyers have served as important partners with medical professional liability companies and indemnifiers. Their successful representation of healthcare professionals embodies excellence in the defence field. On behalf of our members and those they insure, the MPL Association is pleased to honour their work.”
