And finally… dog ate my tag

A burglary suspect has told the High Court in Belfast that his electronic ankle tag was chewed off by his pet dog.

However, he failed to convince the court, which heard that there were “no signs” of teeth marks on the tracking device — and his own lawyer admitted he faced “an uphill battle” to secure bail again.

Jamie Toland, 23, told police he woke to find his dog chewing at the tag, which was attached to his ankle as part of his bail conditions.

He said he tried to get the dog off as quickly as possible, but the tag fell off his leg.

After his court appearance, Toland was remanded into custody and now faces a new charge of criminal damage for allegedly removing the device.

The judge said: “This is an application where I would have to defy all the rules of logic and sense to do other than refuse him bail.”
