And finally…fart police

A Mexican tourist has been awarded $200,000 (€178,062) (£148,474) in damages after he was arrested for failing to obey a police order. Police commands in poorly pronounced Spanish translated to “fart police”.

Mr Salvador Alonso Guerrero-Salmeron was renting a room in Aurora Colorado in March 2023 while promoting his band when a SWAT team arrived to arrest a tenant in another room. Mr Guerrero-Salmeron had no connection to this suspect.

The officers shouted commands in English and poor Spanish to warn of a police dog on the scene. Mr Guerrero-Salmeron does not speak any English and the Spanish translated to “fart police, fart in the wood”.

The police ordered the dog to latch on to Mr Guerrero-Salmeron and he was subsequently arrested and charged with failing to obey a police order. This prosecution was dropped but Mr Guerrero-Salmeron filed a civil lawsuit against the police department alleging excessive force and pursuing a malicious prosecution.

Mr Guerrero-Salmeron was successful in his suit against two of the police officers involved and the jury awarded him $200,000 (€178,062) (£148,474).
