International law firm Addleshaw Goddard has appointed Stephen Barry as a senior partner within its disputes practice in Ireland.

Mr Barry joins Addleshaw Goddard from Eversheds Sutherland, where he spent over 20 years specialising in complex litigation, planning and environmental disputes, as well as regulatory investigations across the infrastructure, energy, and development sectors.

Having represented clients in several high-profile cases before Ireland’s specialist Planning and Environmental Court, Mr Barry has led landmark commercial litigation and judicial review cases.

He also provides strategic advice on crisis management situations, ensuring clients receive comprehensive support in complex and challenging matters.

Mr Barry has extensive experience advising developers, financial institutions and private equity on all aspects of planning law, both contentious and non-contentious.

He has been involved at every stage of the planning process, from pre-submission through to enforcement and has acted in prominent cases involving some of Ireland’s major infrastructure developments.

In addition, Mr Barry is chairperson of the Health and Safety Lawyers Association and has handled various regulatory challenges, including health and safety and industrial accidents.

Mark Walsh, Addleshaw Goddard’s head of Ireland, said: “Stephen’s appointment is another strong addition to our growing team in Ireland.

“As legislative changes, such as the Planning Act 2024, are being introduced, we are seeing a significant increase in demand for specialised advice.

“With his previous experience at another international law firm, Stephen’s expertise will be invaluable in supporting our clients to navigate these new challenges and opportunities.”

Mr Barry added: “I am delighted to join Addleshaw Goddard, and to bring my experience to such an esteemed international team.

“With my extensive experience navigating complex legal matters across a diverse range of industries, I am committed to delivering insightful, practical and strategic solutions to support our clients in achieving their objectives, both in Ireland and internationally.”
