Northern Ireland’s lawyers have been invited to formally take part in Belfast Pride celebrations for the first time next weekend.

Ciáran Moynagh of McLernon Moynagh Solicitors has called on solicitors, barristers and trainees to join the Lawyers at Belfast Pride bloc during the annual parade.

Mr Moynagh told Irish Legal News: “We are the first group of lawyers to formally participate in the Belfast Pride parade.

“I am excited to demonstrate that lawyers are an active part of the community who believe all are equal under the law regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We want to ensure that the LGBT community know that they can access justice without fear or bias.

“Marriage equality remains a significant issue on the agenda on Northern Ireland and we still await judgment in the two recent cases. However I am fully aware that there is much more to do in many areas of government and society to achieve equality. That is why we feel it is so important to be visible and promote a positive message on such a pivotal day in the LGBT calendar.”

Mr Moynagh will also be running a free legal information session out of Belfast LGBT Centre on Monday as part of Belfast Pride Festival.

Barrister Steven McQuitty added: “It’s about time that local lawyers came out in support of Belfast Pride and equal rights for all in Northern Ireland. Barristers and solicitors have a crucial role to play in advocating for equality, human rights and the rule of law for all people, irrespective of sexual orientation.

“As a member of the Bar I am so proud to be a part of the first organised group of solicitors and barristers to participate in Belfast Pride. I really hope that this sends a clear message out that we are here to serve the LGBT community in advancing the cause of equality in Northern Ireland.”

Lawyers are meeting up at 12.30pm at Custom House Square on the day of the Parade (Saturday 6 August).
