The Law Society of Northern Ireland has welcomed the justice minister and the head of Ulster University School of Law to the first event held by its recently-launched Women’s Network.

The “Overcoming Challenges Throughout a Career into Female Leadership” event at Law Society House drew legal professionals from across the jurisdiction and focused on the experiences of women navigating leadership roles in law and public service.

Justice minister Naomi Long and Professor Esther McGuinness took part in a discussion chaired by Claire McAleer, chair of the LSNI’s Women’s Network, which focused on overcoming systemic and cultural barriers to leadership.

The event aimed to inspire and empower women in the legal profession by spotlighting the stories of those who have forged successful leadership paths, often in the face of significant adversity.

Colin Mitchell, president of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, said: “Today’s event is a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and support for women at all stages of their legal careers.

“The Law Society is proud to champion a culture where leadership is inclusive, and where the barriers that have historically limited progression are actively challenged.

“Our Women’s Network plays a vital role in fostering that progress, and I commend everyone involved in delivering such a meaningful discussion today.”

Speaking at the event, Mrs Long reflected on her own journey into political leadership, highlighting the importance of resilience, visibility, and mentorship for women striving to lead.

Professor McGuinness spoke to the challenges and rewards of academic leadership and the role legal education can play in shaping an inclusive profession.

The event also provided attendees with the opportunity to connect with peers, share experiences, and engage in meaningful discussion about structural change, allyship, and leadership development.

The Law Society said the event “marks a significant milestone for the Women’s Network and the Law Society’s continued commitment to supporting gender equity and inclusive leadership across the legal sector”.
