A team of first-year undergraduates at Ulster University (UU) have become the first from the university to win an external moot.

The university was represented at the annual Aoife King Memorial Moot, run by DCU and sponsored by A&L Goodbody, by Ben Lowry, Rebecca-Jane Kelly and Neil McDonagh, alongside their mooting officer and Ulster University Law Society secretary Belinda Widocka.

Mr Lowry, who is vice-president of UU Law Society, told Irish Legal News: “It was an amazing opportunity to compete in our first moot and we are very grateful to DCU for running such a super event.

“Winning the competition has been a great confidence boost, especially against such talented opposition. We have all now got a real taste of mooting/competing and we look forward to the next opportunity. Representing Ulster University was an honour, and the university’s first win at an external moot is really special for us.”

Ulster University will next go head-to-head with Queen’s University Belfast at a moot before the UK Supreme Court when the UK’s top court comes to Belfast for the first time later this month.
