Law student Tara Grattan has been named by Matheson as winner of the 2025 Tim Scanlon corporate law bursary.

Now in its fourth year, the annual bursary honours the memory of late Matheson partner Tim Scanlon and is delivered as part of Matheson’s impactful business programme. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students.

The call for entries launched earlier this year and asked for applicants to submit an essay focused on: “The impact of Brexit on corporate regulation in Ireland — discuss how Ireland’s corporate regulatory landscape has been affected by the UK’s departure from the EU.”

Ms Grattan, a third-year Law with Irish student at University College Dublin (UCD), has been awarded this year’s bursary.

Her “insightful and well-researched entry demonstrated a clear understanding of the relevant issues and the impact of Brexit on Irish businesses”, the firm said.

Ms Grattan has secured a place on Matheson’s summer internship programme, a €5,000 bursary and, in appreciation of Tim Scanlon’s love for the arts, a piece of art by Irish artist Niamh Flanagan.

Michael Jackson, managing partner of Matheson, commented: “Congratulations to Tara, whose essay was a worthy winner of this year’s Tim Scanlon corporate law bursary.

“We are proud to honour Tim’s legacy, through this annual scholarship, which challenges students to express their innovative thinking by applying critical analysis to their legal and academic knowledge.

“At Matheson, we recognise the importance of creating meaningful opportunities for future talent and supporting that talent in achieving its potential.”

Ms Grattan said: “Winning this scholarship in honour of Tim Scanlon has been genuinely transformative for me. At such a pivotal stage in my legal journey, it has not only opened doors but also renewed my confidence in what’s possible.

“It speaks volumes about Matheson, not just as a law firm, but as a place that meaningfully supports and invests in the next generation, and I am incredibly grateful.”

Nicola White, learning and development director at Matheson, added: “Congratulations to Tara on winning this year’s Tim Scanlon corporate bursary with her thought-provoking submission.

“We were delighted to see so many entries again this year, which shows the continued high quality of talented students studying law.”
