Storm Éowyn now costliest weather event in Irish insurance history

Storm Éowyn has become the most expensive storm-related insurance event in Irish history, with claims exceeding €301 million.
Insurance Ireland said a total of 33,678 claims have been recorded since the storm struck Ireland in January 2025, with two-thirds (67 per cent) relating to household damage.
While business claims represent less than a third (29 per cent) of the total volume, they account for most — 55 per cent — of the total value.
The average business claim was €17,000, compared to an average of €5,745 for household claims.
“Eight months on, substantial progress has been made in settling claims and assisting those impacted,” Insurance Ireland said.
The industry group added: “While the insurance industry is not without its critics, Storm Éowyn has highlighted the indispensable role it plays in safeguarding society.
“Without the financial protection provided by insurance, the burden of recovery would likely fall on the government — and ultimately, the taxpayer.
“Insurance ensures that individuals and businesses can get back on their feet quickly, without relying on emergency public funding or State intervention.”
