Roger Casement reburial bid takes formal step forward

Roger Casement

The Roger Casement Commemoration & Re-interment Association have submitted a formal application to Dublin City Council and Glasnevin Cemetery requesting an Exhumation Licence to re-inter Roger Casement at Murlough Bay.

This application is supported by Roger Casement’s family and is made in order to fulfil the wish of Roger Casement to be laid to rest in Murlough Bay, Co Antrim.

Last night, the Association gathered at the Casement Social Club in Belfast alongside their legal team Phoenix Law solicitors, O’Neill’s Funeral Directors and Patrick McCarry who agreed to allow the burial on his ground.

The application is supported by James Casement from Arizona USA, a member of the Casement family and association member. Exhumations are regularly granted across the Island of Ireland, however, this is the first application of its kind in respect of Roger Casement.

Chairperson Alan Daly stated ” This evening after many months of preparation, we have formally applied for the exhumation of Roger Casement to bring him home.

Casement always wanted to return home and today we hope to start the process to make that happen. It is historic to be co-signing this application with Mr Casement’s direct and surviving relative, James Casement. We now look forward to receiving the necessary license from Dublin City Council so we can ensure Mr Casement is returned without any further delay.”
