Public consultation on Irish language’s official standard
The Houses of the Oireachtas Commission has launched a public consultation as part of a statutory review of An Caighdeán Oifigiúil, the guide to official writing in the Irish language.
An Caighdeán Oifigiúil was published for the first time in 1958 and was placed on a statutory basis by the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Act 2013.
In accordance with the 2013 Act, and with the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (Amendment) Act 2018, it is a function of the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission to review An Caighdeán Oifigiúil at least every 10 years.
As almost 10 years have passed since the publication of the last revised version, the Commission is today launching a public consultation to give organisations and members of the public generally who have an interest in the document the opportunity to make submissions in relation to the next review.
Recommendations in this process will focus on amendments which improve the usability of An Caighdeán Oifigiúil by enhancing the clarity of the rules.
Submissions regarding amendments to An Caighdeán Oifigiúil can be made in writing before 5pm on Friday 1 May 2026.
The Houses of the Oireachtas Commission will have regard to any submissions made to it arising from the consultation.
An advisory committee of members with broad-ranging expertise and experience has been established to help the Commission to complete the review. Recommendations received will be submitted to the advisory committee for consideration and a revised version of An Caighdeán Oifigiúil will be published once the review is complete.
