NI: PSNI officer who threatened judge with arrest referred to Attorney General

A police officer who allegedly threatened to arrest a senior judge during court proceedings has been referred to the Attorney General for Northern Ireland.

Thomas Anthony Carlin, 43, appeared at the High Court in Belfast today for trial on one charge of contempt of court.

Mr Carlin, 43, is alleged to have moved towards Judge Justice Gillen at the end of a High Court hearing last week while claiming he was going to arrest him.

The unexpected move prompted security and court staff to remove Mr Carlin from the courtroom.

Mr Carlin told the High Court today that he believed Judge Justice Gillen was “a fugitive unlawfully at large”.

He also argued that there was “no case to answer”, which was rejected by Mr Justice Mark Horner.

Mr Justice Horner told the court that he would refer the case to the Attorney General for subsequent hearing.
