Pre-legislative scrutiny of landmark asylum and immigration bill to begin

Landmark legislation transposing the controversial EU Pact on Migration and Asylum into Irish law is to be scrutinised in the Oireachtas this afternoon.
The Oireachtas joint committee on justice, home affairs and migration will meet from 3pm to 5.30pm today for pre-legislative scrutiny of the general scheme of the International Protection Bill 2025.
Representatives from Tusla, Doras, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and the Ombudsman for Children’s Office will appear at the committee today.
Committee cathaoirleach Matt Carthy said: “The general scheme of the International Protection Bill 2025 is intended to replace the International Protection Act 2015.
“Ireland has opted in to the EU Asylum and Migration Pact which is due to come into effect in June 2026.
“This is a substantial piece of legislation with significant implications for this state and we welcome the opportunity to engage in pre-legislative scrutiny with a variety of stakeholders ahead of the drafting of the new bill which is expected to be published by the end of the year.”
The committee meeting will be streamed live on Oireachtas TV.
