Phoenix Law have initiated legal action against the Southern Area Trust following their decision to move maternity services from Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry to Craigavon Area Hospital.
Solicitor Jack Murphy who is acting for a local expectant mother said: “We have initiated this legal action following a large public demonstration in Newry from all those who hope to retain services at Daisy Hill Hospital.
“We have heard from many persons in the Newry, South Armagh and South Down areas who have relied on Daisy Hill Hospital to deliver this vital service. Our client herself fears the fact that she is now expected to travel to Craigavon should she go into labour. Many parents have stepped forward to explain how this journey was not feasible in their time of need”.
The decision is due to take effect from 23 November and will see all maternity services cease at Daisy Hill. The Southern Trust says that it has been unable to recruit enough consultant obstetricians to safely staff both hospitals. While the move is deemed temporary there is currently no timeline for the service to return.
Daisy Hill serves a largely rural population, some of whom would have a considerable distance to travel to reach Craigavon Hospital. This matter was addressed in a joint statement by DUP MLAs that read: “It is deeply regrettable that the Trust has been forced into this decision. Removing inpatient maternity services from Daisy Hill is a serious blow to the families who rely on it.
“No expectant mother should face longer journeys and added anxiety to give birth. For women in places like Kilkeel and Annalong, getting to Craigavon means a long trip on poor rural roads, often at the most critical moment. The safety of women and babies must come first in every decision.”
